Outdoor living spaces built for Hickory backyards
A good hardscape adds usable space to your home: a paver patio where the family actually eats dinner, with a fire pit everyone gathers around in the fall, a walkway that keeps mud out of the house, or steps that make a sloped yard safe. Hickory's rolling lots and red clay make the part you don't see, the base, just as important as the pavers on top.
Tiny Trail was started by Ivan and Kaylor Garcia, two brothers born and raised in Lincolnton. We do both hardscaping and site grading, so if your paver patio spot needs leveling, a small retaining wall or better drainage first, the same crew handles it from start to finish.

- Walkways and pathways: paver, stone or stepping-stone paths from the driveway, to the back door, through the garden.

How we build a paver patio
- Design visit. We look at the space, how you want to use it, the slope, drainage and access, and talk through materials. Estimates are free.
- Layout and written estimate. You get the size, shape, materials and price in writing before we start.
- Utilities and excavation. NC811 marks underground lines before we dig, as North Carolina requires. Then we excavate the area, adjusting the excavation to your site's conditions.
- Compacted base. A gravel base is laid and compacted, then topped with a bedding layer, both adjusted to your site's conditions. A good base keeps pavers from sinking or shifting in clay.
- Pavers, edges and joints. Pavers are set in your pattern, edge restraint goes in around the edges, and polymeric sand, our standard joint sand, goes into the joints to hold everything tight.
- Finish and clean up. We grade around the paver patio so water drains away, repair the lawn edges and clean the site.

Hardscaping & Paver Patios FAQs
How long does a paver patio last?
A paver patio on a properly compacted base can last for decades. The base is the key. Most sinking or uneven paver patios were built on a thin or poorly compacted base.
Do I need a permit for a paver patio in Hickory?
A ground-level paver patio often doesn't need a building permit, but rules vary with location, size and features like walls, roofs or gas lines. Check with the City of Hickory or Catawba County for your address. Whether Tiny Trail handles the permit depends on the job.
Can you build a paver patio on a sloped backyard?
Yes. Sloped yards are common around Hickory. Depending on the slope, we grade the area level, add a small retaining or seating wall next to the paver patio, or build steps between levels.
When should I book a spring paver patio?
Paver patio season fills up quickly once the weather warms, so planning in winter gives you time to choose materials and get on the schedule. We're currently booking about 1–2 weeks out.
Do you serve Newton and Maiden too?
Yes. Along with Hickory, we serve Newton, Maiden and the surrounding Catawba County area, plus Lincolnton, Denver and the greater Charlotte area.
