Retaining Walls in Lincolnton, NC

Quick answer: Tiny Trail Landscaping builds and repairs block retaining walls for sloped yards in Lincolnton, Denver and across Lincoln County. Every wall starts with a compacted gravel base, a drain line and stone backfill, so it can handle our red clay and heavy rain. Estimates are free, and your price depends on height, length, material and access. Build time depends on the size of the wall.

Retaining walls built for Lincoln County slopes and clay

Many Lincolnton yards have a bank that washes out every rain, a backyard too steep to use, or a driveway cut where the dirt keeps sliding. A well-built retaining wall holds the soil back, controls runoff and turns a slope into flat, usable space for a paver patio, bed or play area.

The red clay common across the North Carolina Piedmont holds water, and saturated soil pushes hard on the back of a wall. Most walls that lean or bulge failed because water had nowhere to go, so we treat drainage as part of the wall, not an add-on.

Tiny Trail was started by brothers Ivan and Kaylor Garcia, born and raised in Lincolnton. We do both hardscaping and site grading, so one local crew handles the digging, base, wall and finished grade.

Retaining wall services

  • New block retaining walls: segmental concrete block walls for slopes, terraces and raised beds. We install Belgard, Allan Block and Versa-Lok wall block.
  • Terraced walls: two or more shorter walls that step down a steep slope, often easier to build and to permit than one tall wall.
  • Retaining wall repair and rebuilds: we repair and rebuild old walls, including timber walls, that lean, bulge or have collapsed.
  • Walls with steps, paver patios and planting beds: tie the wall into steps, a paver patio or a new bed.
  • Grading and drainage around the wall: shaping the ground above and below the wall so water moves away from it and from your house. See land grading & site prep.

How we build a retaining wall

  1. Site visit and measurements. We check the slope, soil, water flow and equipment access. Estimates are free.
  2. Plan and estimate. You get a written plan with wall length, height, material and drainage, plus the price. For taller walls or walls near a structure, we'll talk about whether engineering or a permit is needed.
  3. Call NC811 and excavate. Utilities get marked before we dig (NC811 is required in North Carolina before excavation). Then we dig the trench down to firm soil.
  4. Base and first course. We compact a gravel base and set the first course level. This step decides whether the wall stays straight.
  5. Drainage and backfill. A perforated drain pipe goes behind the bottom of the wall, and clean stone backfill goes in as the wall rises. Taller walls may need reinforcement grid.
  6. Cap, grade and clean up. Caps go on, the ground above and below is final-graded, and the site is cleaned up.

Retaining Walls FAQs

Do I need a permit for a retaining wall in Lincoln County?

It depends on the wall's height, location and whether it supports a driveway, structure or slope near a property line. Check with Lincoln County or City of Lincolnton building inspections for your address. Whether Tiny Trail handles the permit depends on the job. For taller walls, Tiny Trail arranges the engineering.

What's the best retaining wall material for clay soil?

Segmental concrete block is the most common choice for residential walls because it's strong, drains well when built correctly and comes in many styles. It's what we build, using Belgard, Allan Block and Versa-Lok block. With any block, the base, drainage and backfill matter more than the block itself.

Why do retaining walls lean or fall?

Usually water pressure. When clay behind a wall gets saturated and there's no drain pipe or stone backfill, the pressure pushes the wall out. Poor base compaction and walls built too tall without reinforcement are the other common causes.

How long does it take to build a retaining wall?

Build time depends on the size of the wall. Weather matters too: wet clay can delay excavation after heavy rain.
